Becky Fertig Cohen has spent nearly two decades working in the public sector, including on Capitol Hill and in state and federal government.

From 2012 – 2023 Becky held multiple senior-level roles at the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), the largest funder of civil legal aid in the country. She served as Chief of Staff starting in 2015 and was appointed Corporate Secretary in February 2020. Becky helped run the day-to-day operations and provided strategic direction for the 150-person organization, which receives an annual federal appropriation of over $500 million. She also served as the main point of contact for the 11-member Board of Directors, who are presidentially appointed and Senate-confirmed.

From 2010 – 2012, Becky was a Congressional Liaison Officer at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in the Office of Legislative & Public Affairs. She worked closely with bureaus across the agency to help advocate their legislative interests before Congress. 

 From 2007 – 2010, Becky served as the Deputy Director in the New York State Governor’s Washington, D.C. Office. The office is tasked with developing and implementing federal legislative and advocacy strategies to advance the federal priorities of the state. Becky’s portfolio included issues related to education, national and community service, and Indian law policy. Becky was the main point of contact between the Governor’s office and the National Governors Association, the Democratic Governors Association, and staff in the executive branch at the White House Intergovernmental Affairs Office, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Corporation for National & Community Service.

In 2006, Becky worked in the United States Senate as the Central New York Regional Representative for former U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. Becky represented the Senator in meetings and events with businesses and community leaders.

Originally from Central New York, Becky holds a J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law and a B.A. in political science and geography from Colgate University. She is admitted to practice law in New York State and the District of Columbia.

Becky serves on a D.C. Public School (DCPS) Local School Advisory Team, which advises the principal on matters related to teaching and learning, leadership, job-embedded professional development, resources, safe and effective learning environments, and family and community engagement.  

She also is a founding board member for Public Service Promise, a D.C. nonprofit organization, which was created to disperse and oversee Cy Pres funds awarded in a settlement agreement for the purpose of providing education and student loan counseling to borrowers employed in public service.
